湯姆威茲Tom Waits的奇異魅力 音樂

第一次接觸到湯姆威茲(Tom Waits)不是因為他的音樂, 而是多年前在電影紫苑草( Ironweed, 1988)中的演出, 他雖然沒有漂亮的臉孔, 但是這麼個混合著無賴, 落魄, 野性, 慧黠, 放浪, 軔性於一體的中年破鑼嗓子男人, 硬是在傑克尼克遜與梅麗史翠普兩大演技怪物夾殺下, 讓人忘不了他的身影, 這就是Tom Waits的魅力, 十個好萊塢美型男加起來也搆不著邊的奇異組合.
他有一股老式黑白照片人物的氣質：捲曲的短髮、瘦長的身驅、圓頂帽、停不了的煙與酒、落寞卻明亮的眼神，活像是30年代經濟大恐慌後為生活壓迫的心酸男子漢，我在心中盤算來盤算去，也想不起還有誰有近似的氣質，可是當聽到他的歌聲時，又是像個老朋友似的那麼撫慰人心。大多的演藝人員，從年輕時出道，隨著時代的前進，他們就漸漸變得像努力跟卻跟不上時代的老滑稽，他們的價值觀與動作，完全是被動的依照當代的主流品味與窠臼來反應，他們的生活（幕前或幕後的），在在的由於荒腔走板而暴露出其缺乏信仰與自信。
而Tom Waits則不然，他的生活與音樂的表情，是一體的，有粗獷也有溫柔，有大聲而自信的生活宣示，他從不隨市場起舞，不必去做一堆市調，或是些商業行銷導向的音樂企劃，還是精心雕琢的形象、服裝、髮型、話題、緋聞等等，他只單純的做自己的音樂，因為音樂感動人，所以有人喜歡，邏輯就是這麼簡單，整個唱片音樂圈套用在別的藝人身上，所謂必要之惡的扭曲操作手法，在他身上都可以得到反證。
除此之外，Tom Waits就是個不折不扣隱身於我們週邊的一個努力生活的人，據信目前他人在加州酒鄉附近過著低調的生活。用自己的方式做自己喜愛的事，長期堅持自己的中心價值，喜歡家庭與孩子圍繞傳統人情的Tom Waits，我認為是真正的酷。

一九四九年十二月七日生於加州西南部的波姆那(Pomona)的湯姆‧威茲，在七○年代創作出結合關注分離狀態、低收入生活人民的作品，並以他沙啞的嗓音娓娓道出這些邊緣世界。八○年代起，他增加了在戲劇方面的活動，包括演出和作曲。在南加州長大的湯姆‧威茲引起賀伯‧柯恩﹝Herb Cohen，他同是時也是法蘭克‧查帕(Frank Zappa)的經紀人﹞的注意，並在七○年代初簽下了他。湯姆‧威茲正式首張專輯為一九七三年在Asylum唱片公司發行的的《Closing Time》，這張收錄了單曲〈Ol' 55〉的作品在當時和老鷹合唱團(The Eagles)的《On the Border》專輯共同宣傳，自此，湯姆‧威茲引起樂評和次文化聽眾的注意，他接下來的作品包括了《The Heart of Saturday Night》(1974)、《Nighthawks at the Diner》(1975)、《Small Change》(1976)、《Foreign Affairs》(1977)、《Blue Valentine》(1978)及《Heart Attack and Vine》(1980)。
