R先生有妻兒、一間租來的公寓,還有電視和舒適的傢俱裝潢讓他中產階級的生活更加幸福美滿。他滿足於家庭和辦公室的工作,興趣嗜好則偶爾為平靜的生活帶來一些變化。R先生每日機械般的規律生活運作良好—同事友善、上司滿意、妻子每天接他下班、幫兒子改作業、週末邀老友聚會,升遷在望,一切都很順利,自我實現眼見就要成真。R先生看起來身心得宜,沒什麼不滿之處,直到有一晚,他突然抓狂,開始攻擊家人和鄰居…。
當本片於1970年在柏林影展首映時,媒體的反應非常熱烈而兩極,法國影評人Michel Perez認為法斯賓達終於證明他想證明事物的反面,我們幾乎是和他站在同一陣線,對抗那些想打擊他的自以為是的知識份子。他的悲觀主義其實是已過時的寫實主義的一部份。英國《視與聲》雜誌則評論:本片刻意以散漫、甚至惹人厭的方式拍攝,攝影機只是對著那些每天進行的冗長談話和令人尷尬的芝麻蒜皮瑣事;法斯賓達的電影帶有犀利、迂迴的力道。也有影評認為本片的悲觀絕望讓人難以承受,而片中泛白的色調更強化了原本灰暗的主題。
法斯賓達在本片再次觸及了「溝通不良」與「被迫溝通」的現代病徵。直到影片最後帶有恐怖劇驚人效果的結局,我們才了解R先生對週遭看似僵硬漠然的反應並不自然,而是源自個人與外界之間長期的疏離狀態,是一種對循著規範而活的無意義人生的反叛與絕望姿態。法斯賓達並非想控訴社會或個人該為這樣的災難結果負責,而是想提醒觀眾,看似正常的生活其實是多麼反常。
Herr R. (Kurt Raab) has a wife and a child, a medium-size rental apartment with a garden, he owns a TV set, and comfortable furniture complete his middle class existence. His work at home and in the office fulfills him, hobbies offer him a change; and then Herr R. loves peace and quiet. The machinery of everyday routine functions. At work – Herr R. is an engineering draftsman – the colleagues are nice, his boss (Franz Maron) is content, his wife (Lilith Ungerer) picks him up every day after work in their car. He corrects his son’s homework, invites the in-laws and an old school friend on Sunday afternoons, a promotion is in sight. Everyone is happy. It appears that without too much mental or physical complaint, Herr R.’s selfrealization will be possible. Then one evening – a neighbor (Irm Hermann) has just stopped by – Herr R., like a machine, attacks his wife, child, and neighbor.
