THE PRESIDENT is Carl Th. Dreyer's first feature film as director. Already in his debut we are witnesses to the thematic mainstay of most of his later films; the mother left to her own destiny with her illegitimate child. In this film the man is haunted by guilt, which he is not allowed to report. THE PRESIDENT has its world premiere in Sweden in Feb. 1919. It premiered in Denmark in the Panoptikon Theatre in Copenhagen on Feb. 9, 1920.

ONCE UPON A TIME is Carl Theodor Dreyer's adaptation of Holger Drachmann's popular nationalistic play. Despite the loss of approximately half of the moving picture content, the surviving scenes can now be seen in a complete narrative. ONCE UPON A TIME had its premiere in the Palads Theatre in Copenhagen on October 3, 1922. Holger Drachmann's play from 1883 is based on Hans Christian Anderson's "Svinedrengen" and William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew".

Since the failure of his small business, Victor has become a household tyrant, constantly complaining and criticising his long-suffering family. The saintly forbearance of his wife lda seems only to drive Victor to ever more vindictive acts of tyranny. Finally Victor’s old nanny, watching his behaviour with increasing fury, takes drastic action. With an enchanting performance from Astrid Holm at its centre, this is a carefully observed comedy of manners, tackling issues of domestic inequality which are still relevant today.

每一本電影教科書都必提的一部經典藝術電影。聖女貞德的故事被搬上銀幕恐怕不下十次,本片以典型德萊葉極簡風格及象徵影像,把時空鎖定在貞德被捕入獄後受審的過程,一直到她被綁上十字架受火刑為止。本片曾在一場大火中燒毀殆盡,多年不見蹤跡,變成一部傳說中的經典,一直到1980年代,一個倖存拷貝意外被發現,再由法國高蒙電影公司從新整理版本,以最接近原貌的方式重新推出,讓觀眾得以了解,德萊葉的影像風格早在默片時期便已成熟。

德萊葉電影中情節最高潮起伏的作品。影片從十七世紀的獵捕女巫開始,帶出一個牧師家庭中緊張、枯竭的婆媳、夫妻關係,以及充滿生命歡愉的不倫之戀。安娜與年齡相當的繼子產生感情,她詛咒丈夫死亡,竟一語成讖。片中每一個鏡頭的光影與構圖都與劇中人的心境緊密呼應,獵捕女巫的過程更讓全片充滿肅殺之氣;相對地,影片中的戀愛情節也出現德萊葉電影裡少見的大自然景色,隱喻生命與愛情的歡娛。本片將以修復過的35釐米拷貝做放映。
Filmed during the Nazi occupation of Denmark, Carl Dreyer’s DAY OF ANGER is a harrowing account of individual helplessness in the face of growing social repression and paranoia. Anna, the young second wife of a well-respected but much older pastor, falls in love with her stepson when he returns to their small 17th-century village where stepping outside the bounds of the village’s harsh moral code has disastrous results.

《復活》描述一個宗教信仰不算虔誠的家庭,大兒子一家和樂,小兒子則終日幻想自己是耶穌。當長媳因難產而面臨死亡威脅時,這家人對上帝的信仰受到極大的考驗。影片中有德萊葉擅長的以光影做暗喻,象徵宗教生活與世俗生活者的差異。看此片很難不聯想到拉斯馮提爾的《破浪而出》,兩者主題同樣都是:信仰能創造奇蹟!影片中被大家視為精神病患的角色也不免讓人聯想到《醫院風雲》中的蒙古症患者,世人眼中的瘋狂癡呆,實為若愚大智。
A farmer’s family is torn apart by faith, sanctity, and love – the first child believes he’s Jesus Christ, the second proclaims himself agnostic, and the third falls in love with a fundamentalist’s daughter. Putting the lie to the term “organized religion,” ORDET is a challenge to simple facts and dogmatic orthodoxy. Layering multiple stories of faith and rebellion, Dreyer’s adaptation of Kaj Munk’s play quietly builds towards a shattering, miraculous climax.

粹愛情的中產階級貴婦,先與三名男子斡旋,最後選擇孤獨以終。不同於德萊葉多部電影中等待救援的弱女子,葛楚顯然是個意志力堅強的聰慧女性,不能忍受被擺在第二位。本片以近似舞台劇的方式拍攝,演員的表演方法相當風格化,讓葛楚這個角色得以侃侃而談她的愛情觀。這樣一個為了愛情可以拋棄一切的女性形象,日後在安東尼奧尼,高達,楚浮等導演的作品中也多次出現。

A woman leaves her unfulfilling marriage and embarks on a search for ideal love— but neither a passionate affair with a younger man nor the return of an old romance can provide the answer she seeks. Always the stylistic innovator, Dreyer employs long takes and theatrical staging to concentrate on Nina Pens Rode’s sublime portrayal of the proud and courageous Gertrud.
